What Tomorrow Holds

Another scan tomorrow - bones only this time. The scans feel routine now and I wasn't even planning to tell people that I'm going in again. But being pulled off my meds a couple of weeks ago due to the issue with my white blood cells reminded me that life can change at a moment's notice. One little blood test and you're suddenly too "sick" to continue taking your meds.

So now I'm sitting here thinking how one tiny new spot on this scan will change everything. We'll have to go back to the list of treatment options, find the next most promising one and try that. But if there are no new spots, we maintain status quo. And there's no way to know ahead of time which way things will go. As I learned with my initial diagnosis, one day you think you're fine and the next day you have a terminal illness. And you don't feel any different.

But I read these words from one of my favorite authors, Ann Voskamp, this morning and I carry them into tomorrow with me:
And to be an optimist — for a moment, you first have to be a pessimist.
Because sometimes you can only be an optimist when you have a plan for the pessimist in you. So, you play out the law of Worst Case Scenario: What is the worst thing that could possibly happen?
And there aren’t wolves, trouble, kids, hatred, debts, messes, betrayal, teenagers, disease, lack, hard times, untruths, diagnoses, or disappointment that can possibly separate you from the love of God. Nothing can separate you from Him.
So the Worst Case Scenario? Is only the scenario of not wanting Christ the most.
So the Worst Case Scenario — is only a possible scenario if you want something more than Christ.
If you want Christ the most — there is no worst case scenario.
Live and He’s using everything to shape you more into Christ and abundant life in Him.
Die and you have eternal life in Him.
Abundant life versus eternal life — it’s impossible to lose!
You can’t lose.
When you have a plan in place for the worst — you never go to the the place of worry. And the plan for when all hell breaks lose is that Christ’s already broken the power of hell and to live is Christ and to die is gain, so the plan is always joy.
